1. Rural horizontal loops versus urban vertical boreholes
Alberta specifically notes that rural installations can use open land for horizontal loops and that trenching tends to cost substantially less than drilling. That can make an acreage project fundamentally different from a Calgary or Edmonton infill property. A horizontal design still needs enough suitable land, appropriate burial depth, accessible soil and a restoration plan.
Vertical loops use less surface area but add specialized drilling, grouting and reporting. Ask the contractor to show the bore count, depth, pipe size, grout specification and design assumptions rather than quoting a single unexplained “loop field” allowance.
2. The home's measured heating and cooling load
