Why there is no feet-per-ton answer

Loop length changes with the building's hourly and annual loads, the selected unit's heat extraction and rejection, local ground conductivity and groundwater, bore or trench construction, spacing, grout, pipe, fluid, flow, pumping energy, climate balance, and acceptable entering-water temperatures. Two homes with the same nominal tonnage can need different ground heat exchangers.

Current design standard

IGSHPA identifies CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:2025 as its current design and installation standard. The older 2017 IGSHPA document is sunset for current work.
