Budget warning: The City of Toronto says a 200-amp electrical-service upgrade can add roughly C$3,500 to C$5,000. Duct changes, panel work, landscaping, difficult drilling, indoor equipment removal and tax may also sit outside an advertised system price.
What changes the final Ontario quote?
1. The home's measured heating and cooling load
Square footage alone is not enough. Insulation, air leakage, windows, ceiling height, exposure and design temperature affect the required capacity. Ask for the written load calculation. Oversizing raises equipment and loop costs; undersizing can increase backup-heat use.
2. Horizontal versus vertical ground loops
A horizontal loop needs more usable land but can avoid deep drilling. A vertical loop fits a smaller footprint but needs specialized drilling and, for systems extending more than five metres below ground, provincial approval. Rock, groundwater conditions, access for a drill rig, spoils removal and bore depth all influence price.
3. Existing ducts, electrical service and indoor equipment
A quote may assume the current ducts and electrical panel are adequate. Confirm whether it includes duct balancing or replacement, a panel or service upgrade, backup heat, thermostat and controls, water-heating options, removal of the old system and final commissioning.
4. Site restoration and permits
Trenching and drilling can affect lawns, driveways and landscaping. Confirm who pays for permits, utility locates, engineering, soil removal, grouting, pavement or lawn restoration and any municipal inspections.
5. What the contractor has excluded
The lowest number is not necessarily the lowest complete cost. Compare tax, allowances and exclusions line by line. A useful quote separates the heat-pump equipment, loop field, drilling or excavation, interior labour, electrical work, ductwork, permits and restoration.
Ontario geothermal rebates available in 2026
The province-wide Home Renovation Savings program lists two ground-source heat-pump rebate paths. Eligibility depends on the home's primary heating fuel and other program rules.

Pre-approval is mandatory. The program directs homeowners to choose a participating contractor, who submits the pre-installation application. Two transparent rebate examples
- If an eligible Enbridge natural-gas home used the City's C$30,000 planning figure, subtracting the C$3,000 rebate would leave C$27,000 before tax, plus any excluded work.
- If an eligible non-gas home installed a qualifying 4-ton system at the same C$30,000 planning figure, C$2,000 per ton would equal C$8,000, leaving C$22,000 before tax, plus any excluded work.
These are arithmetic examples, not project quotes. The maximum C$12,000 program amount would require at least six eligible tons, and a larger system would not necessarily carry the same installed price as the City's 3.5- to 4-ton example.
Federal programs homeowners may still see in old articles
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is closed, and its final documentation deadline was December 31, 2025. The Canada Greener Homes Loan is also closed to new applications; Natural Resources Canada says funding is fully committed. Do not subtract either one from a new 2026 quote.
Toronto homeowners can separately review the City's Home Energy Loan Program. Applications are open and financing can cover up to C$125,000 in eligible home-energy work, including geothermal. A loan reduces the cash needed upfront but does not reduce the project price.

Ontario drilling approvals and municipal permits
For a new or replacement vertical closed-loop system extending more than five metres below ground, Ontario requires an Environmental Compliance Approval supported by a work plan. Open-loop systems using a well fall under Ontario's Wells Regulation, and water-taking or wastewater approvals may also apply depending on the design.
Municipal requirements can add another layer. The City of Toronto's geothermal permit guide calls for a standalone mechanical permit, a site plan showing boreholes, equipment specifications, a borehole schedule, mechanical drawings and the driller's environmental approval. Requirements outside Toronto can differ, so the contractor should identify the provincial and municipal approvals in writing.
Will geothermal save money in an Ontario home?
Natural Resources Canada says a ground-source system can save roughly 65% compared with an electric furnace and, on average, deliver about 10% to 20% more savings than a best-in-class cold-climate air-source heat pump. Those are performance comparisons, not guaranteed bill savings.
