Top Maryland cities for geothermal contractors

Coverage spans the Baltimore metro (Baltimore, Cockeysville, Towson), the Washington DC suburbs (Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg), Howard and Anne Arundel counties, and the Eastern Shore. Maryland's mix of dense suburbs and rural counties means both vertical and horizontal loops have viable applications.

Maryland geothermal incentives in 2026

The Maryland Energy Administration closed the fiscal 2026 geothermal rebate portal on January 6 after requests exceeded the full $150,000 budget; this was the program's final year. Do not subtract the former $3,000 grant from a new quote. Qualifying ground-loop equipment may receive state sales-tax treatment, a locality may choose to offer a property-tax credit, and an eligible system may generate renewable-energy certificates, but each path requires separate verification. The federal residential credit is unavailable for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Maryland climate and ground conditions

Maryland straddles humid subtropical (Cfa) in the south and humid continental (Dfa) in the north and west. Summer cooling load is significant in DC suburbs and the Eastern Shore — geothermal pays back partly through reduced cooling cost as well as winter heating. Ground temperatures at typical loop depth stay around 55–58°F.

The Piedmont (central Maryland — Baltimore, Frederick, Howard) sits on schist and gneiss bedrock that drills reliably for vertical bores. Western Maryland (Garrett, Allegany counties) has Allegheny Plateau bedrock with similar drilling characteristics to western Pennsylvania. The Coastal Plain (Eastern Shore — Anne Arundel, Talbot, Worcester counties) has unconsolidated sand and clay over deeper aquifers — horizontal loops work where lot size allows; vertical bores are also straightforward. Pond loops are viable on properties with adequate water access.

Maryland permits, licensing, and inspections

Maryland's well-construction rules require a permit for a closed-loop well and an identification tag for each bore; the published permit duration is 12 months. Mechanical, electrical and local building approvals can be separate. Require the contract to identify the responsible licensed well professional, HVACR contractor, other trades, permits and closeout records.

Frequently asked questions

How much does geothermal cost in Maryland?

A Maryland Energy Administration study used $16,000–$40,000 as the fully installed range for a four-ton single-family system. It is a planning case rather than a guaranteed 2026 average.

Is Maryland's $3,000 geothermal rebate open?

No. The fiscal 2026 portal closed January 6 after requests exceeded the final program budget. Do not subtract that grant from a new quote.

Does Maryland require a permit for closed-loop wells?

Yes. The state rules require a closed-loop well permit and an identification tag for each bore. Local trade and building approvals may also apply.
